ORGANIZATIONS:

The Institute for Public Health (IPH) serves as a bridge between the public health academic community and public health practice. It supports the development of mutually beneficial partnerships between the San Diego State University (SDSU) Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH), local public health agencies, and private organizations. Our academic-practice partnerships are regional, California statewide and along the international border. These partnerships are intended to expand the base of knowledge for all individuals working in public health, and are facilitated through student field placements, internships, scholarships, collaborative faculty-practitioner research, program evaluation, technical assistance, continuing education, professional development, agency capacity building, and dissemination of health data and information.

Since 1956, the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties has effectively advanced the interests of hospitals in San Diego and Imperial counties. We are a non-profit organization representing 35 hospitals and integrated health systems in the two-county area.

MISSIONS:

IPH’s mission is to improve the public’s health by promoting best practices through quality practice-based research, evaluation, training, technology, and effective partnerships that bridge academic and community knowledge.

HASD&IC’s mission is to advance the organization, management and effective delivery of affordable, medically necessary, quality health care services for the San Diego and Imperial County communities. HASD&IC provides leadership, representation and advocacy on behalf of our members and in collaboration with local governmental entities, safety-net providers, the media, business coalitions, academia, community organizations and the public.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Developing surveys using survey software
  • Data analysis
  • Investigation of various data sources
  • Data entry and management
  • Development of materials to be used to describe results to the community
  • Report writing
  • Attendance and support at meetings with hospital representatives
  • Research on best practices in community health needs assessments
  • Research on hospital led community health programs

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Preferred: Enrolled in MPH program. Preferably an Epidemiology student

EXPERIENCE OR SPECIAL SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS (Required):

  • Experience using statistical analysis software, SPSS
  • Experience in Excel and PowerPoint programs

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Well organized with attention to detail
  • Professional demeanor
  • Ability to meet deadlines and follow through with tasks
  • Motivated self-starter
  • Adaptable with the ability to manage multiple tasks

SCHEDULE:

Flexible hours, based on your schedule and our office hours. A minimum of 10-12 hours per week on site are expected. This position earns course credit and is eligible for 180 hours (3 units) of field placement.

Prior to accepting an internship that you may count towards the fulfillment of your Field Placement PH 650/750 or 850 courses, you will need to register for this course with GSPH.

First, complete the Field Placement Planning Form, and once reviewed and approved, submit an online request form. Once approved you will receive a schedule number to register for the course.
