Elisa Sobo, PhD

Elisa (‘EJ’) Sobo is the Senior Research Scientist for the IPH’s Maternal and Child Health Initiative. Elisa is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, and a long-term Visiting Scholar in UCSD’s department of anthropology. A socio-cultural medical anthropologist, Dr. Sobo’s primary area of research interest is the cultural context of health, illness, and medicine.

Dr. Sobo's content areas of expertise include:

  • Qualitative methodology, including ethnography as well as rapid assessment
  • Health-related risk perception
  • Medical error and safety
  • Child and adolescent health
  • Traditional and contemporary childbirth-related knowledge and practice
  • Sexual and reproductive health, including as related to HIV/AIDS
  • Cultural issues in health care provision
  • Anthropology of the body
